In 1952, Willy Breitling developed a wrist-worn chronograph with a circular slide rule, allowing pilots to calculate all critical flight data. Two years later, the aircraft owners and the Association of Pilots of the World (AOPA) declared it their official timepiece. Thus, the “navigation timer”—the Navitimer—was born.
AOPA was (and still is) the world’s largest pilots’ club, comprising virtually all American pilots. Throughout the glory days of civil aviation, the Navitimer served as the de facto pilot’s watch, worn by airline captains and aircraft enthusiasts alike. In 1962, astronaut Scott Carpenter even wore one into space. And it wasn’t just pilots who were captivated by the watch’s irresistible beauty.
